FORMER CHERRY CREEK LB MARCHIOL KICKED OFF TEAM

-

ARIZ.» Arizona transfer linebacker TUCSON, Santino Marchiol has been dismissed from the team after a video surfaced of him appearing to use a racial slur to describe former teammates at Texas A&M.

Wildcats coach Kevin Sumlin said during his Monday news conference that Marchiol is no longer with the team, but did not give a specific reason why.

The Dallas Morning News reported last week that a video showed Marchiol using a racial slur to describe teammates while he was at Texas A&M.

Marchiol transferred to Arizona this year after Sumlin left the Aggies to take the job in Tucson. Marchiol told USA Today last week that he was given cash on two occasions by a Texas A&M assistant coach to entertain recruits on official visits.

Texas A&M is investigating the claims.

Marchiol played two seasons at Cherry Creek High School before transferring to IMG Academy in Florida for his senior year.

Panthers sign Brouwer.

The Florida Panthers agreed to terms Monday with veteran right winger Troy Brouwer on an $850,000, one-year contract.

Brouwer became a free agent when the Calgary Flames bought out the final two years of his deal.

“Troy is a skilled veteran forward with championship experience,” general manager Dale Tallon said. “He adds depth to our forward group and his leadership will help our developing young core take the next step this season.”

The 33-year-old put up 22 points on six goals and 16 assists in 76 games last season. He recorded 27 points in two seasons with the Flames after they signed him to an $18 million, four-year contract.

Brouwer has 169 goals and 172 assists for 341 points in his 12-year NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues and Flames. He’s a three-time 20-goal scorer and won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2010.

Adding Brouwer ramps up competition among Panthers forwards for spots in the bottom six. Florida missed the playoffs by a point last season, acquired winger Mike Hoffman by trade, signed Frank Vatrano and could be ready to elevate 2017 first-round pick Owen Tippett into a full-time role.

Manziel back at practice.

» Johnny Manziel was back at Montreal Alouettes practice on Monday but Antonio Pipkin took the first reps with the starters.

However, the two quarterbacks shared reps almost equally. The quarterback who goes first usually starts the next game, but it appeared that coach Mike Sherman is keeping his options open.

The Alouettes play Friday night in Ottawa.

Manziel missed two games while under concussion protocol. He missed the two practices last week, but took part in a team walkthrough on Thursday.

The Alouettes acquired Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, in July in a deal with Hamilton. He played his first two CFL games for Montreal before suffering a head injury against Ottawa.

Watt’s hurricane relief .

» Houston Texans star J.J. Watt says he has distributed the $41.6 million his foundation raised to help rebuild the Texas Gulf Coast after Hurricane Harvey.

An online fundraiser Watt launched after the storm hit Texas last year went viral and far exceeded his original goal of raising $200,000.

Watt routed the money to eight groups actively involved in Texas’ rebuilding and recovery. According to the Texans, the funds have already been used to clean up and rebuild more than 600 homes, distribute more than 26,000 meals and provide health care to more than 6,500 people. — The Associated Press
