Looking Ahead

- — Patrick Saunders, The Denver Post

Rockies RHP German Marquez (119, 4.21 ERA) at Padres LHP Eric Lauer (57, 5.30), 8:10 p.m. Thursday; ATTRM, 630 AM Marquez pitched seven scoreless innings last Saturday vs. the Cardinals at Coors Field. He didn’t get the win but allowed just three singles, didn’t walk a batter and struck out nine. He posted 17 of his 21 outs via groundballs or strikeouts. Over his past 10 starts, Marquez is 61 with a 2.57 ERA. He’s succeeding by combining a lethal 95 mph fastball, an excellent curve and a developing slider, making him one of baseball’s best young starting pitchers. Freddy Galvis and Wil Myers typically rake against the Rockies, but Marquez has done a good job containing both of them — Galvis is 0for7 against him with two strikeouts, and Myers is 0for10 with five strikeouts. Lauer, who’s been troubled by a strained forearm, will come off the 10day disabled list to start. He replaces Clayton Richard, who is set to undergo seasonending surgery. Lauer threw only 61 pitches in a rehab start last Friday, so he likely won’t pitch deep into Thursday’s game. The Rockies have only 12 combined atbats against Lauer. Friday: Rockies RHP Antonio Senzatela (44, 5.24 ERA) at Padres RHP Brett Kennedy (02, 7.58), 8:10 p.m., ATTRM Saturday: Rockies RHP Jon Gray (107, 4.76) at Padres LHP Robbie Erlin (34, 3.69), 6:40 p.m., ATTRM

Rockies LHP Kyle Freeland (127, 2.90) at Padres RHP Jacob Nix (22, 4.05), 2:10 p.m., ATTRM
