FAMILY: INDYCAR’S WICKENS BROKE NECK AND SPINAL CORD
INDIANAPOLIS» IndyCar driver Robert Wickens fractured his spinal cord and neck, as well as seven other serious injuries, when he crashed at Pocono Raceway.
The family of the Canadian driver revealed the injuries Wickens suffered when his car launched into the fence Aug. 19 at the Pennsylvania track. He had surgeries this week to repair fractures to both of his legs and hands and is expected to be moved to a rehabilitation center soon. It could be months before the severity of the spine injury is known. The Wickens family revealed the extent of his injuries Thursday via Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.
Longtime Oregon State coach Pat Casey steps down.
Oregon State baseball coach Pat Casey, who led the Beavers to three national championships, has announced his retirement after 24 seasons with the team.
Casey’s most recent College World Series title came this summer, following backtoback titles in 2006 and 2007. Since 2005, the Beavers have made the NCAA Tournament field 12 times — and they have advanced to Omaha six times.
2 FIU football players shot; assailant at large.
MIAMI» Two FIU football players were shot Thursday afternoon, and police said they were looking for who was responsible for what they called a driveby attack.
Opalocka (Fla.) Police Chief James Dobson identified the players as running back Anthony Jones and offensive lineman Mershawn Miller. Jones was shot in the face and back, while Miller was shot in the arm.
Dobson said the condition of both players was stable, and that the injuries were not lifethreatening.
Garnett sues accountant over $77M lost to wealth manager.
NEAPOLIS» Kevin Garnett is suing an accountant and his firm, alleging they helped a wealth manager steal $77 million from the retired Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics star. The federal malpractice lawsuit alleges Kentuckybased accountant Michael Wertheim and Welenken CPAs enabled Charles Banks IV of Atlanta to defraud Garnett through businesses in which Garnett and Banks shared an interest.
Trainer who worked with Nassar arrested at Texas airport.
HOUSTON» Authorities in Texas have arrested a former sports medicine trainer charged in connection to Larry Nassar, the former sports doctor who admitted to molesting gymnasts for years. The Walker County District Attorney’s office says Debra Van Horn was detained Thursday morning by Homeland Security officials at a Houston airport as she exited a flight from China. A grand jury has indicted Van Horn on a single count of seconddegree sexual assault of a child.
December earliest NHL would vote on Seattle expansion.
December is the earliest the NHL Board of Governors will vote on potential expansion to Seattle, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Thursday. Daly also called it “doubtful” any formal vote will happen on a Seattle franchise between meetings in October and December. Seattle Hockey Partners, the group looking to bring the NHL to the Pacific Northwest, will make a presentation to board’s executive committee on Oct. 2. No vote will take place that day.
NHL not changing marijuana policy as Canada legalizes.
CHICAGO» Deputy commissioner Bill Daly says the NHL does not expect to change its rules on marijuana with the legalization of cannabis in Canada coming on Oct. 17. Daly said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday that the move won’t affect the NHL/ NHLPA drugtesting policy. Daly said the league tests for marijuana but a positive test by itself does not lead to a suspension.
