GOLDEN KNIGHTS GET FORWARD PACIORETTY

The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired allstar forward Max Pacioretty from the Montreal Canadiens for Tomas Tatar, prospect Nick Suzuki and a 2019 secondroun­d pick.

Pacioretty was named the Canadiens’ captain in 2015 and has played all 626 of his NHL games with Montreal. Pacioretty recently denied reports that he had requested a trade. His name has been mentioned in trade speculatio­n since last season’s trade deadline.

The 29yearold Pacioretty is entering the final season of a sixyear deal that will pay him $4.5 million.

Tatar had 20 goals and 14 assists last season with Vegas and Detroit. The 27yearold was acquired ahead of the trade deadline.

Suzuki was the 13th overall pick in the 2017 draft by the Golden Knights.

Young auto racing fan dies.

IOWA» An 11yearold OSKALOOSA,

Iowa boy who wanted racing stickers to cover his casket has died.

Michael Sytsma, of Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, said Caleb Hammond died Monday. Sytsma declined to say where.

Caleb’s stepmother, Kaylee Hammond, posted a photo of the boy on her Facebook page and said in a post Saturday that he had taken a turn for the worse Friday.

His family brought him home to Oskaloosa, about 55 miles southeast of Des Moines, after determinin­g the painful leukemia treatments he had been undergoing at a Des Moines hospital weren’t working and other options offered little hope.

Race drivers and others answered his call for the stickers, and he was even given a chance to drive a race car at a local track, under the guidance of a 12yearold racer.

Deng signs with Timberwolv­es.

MINNEAPOLI­S» The Minnesota Timberwolv­es signed freeagent forward Luol Deng.

Deng’s oneyear deal is for $2.4 million, according to a source. Deng will join former Bulls teammates Jimmy Butler, Taj Gibson and Derrick Rose in Minnesota. They all played for Timberwolv­es coach Tom Thibodeau with Chicago, too.

Suns’ Booker has hand surgery.

Suns star guard Devin Booker had surgery on his right (shooting) hand and is expected to be sidelined for six weeks.

That would cause him to miss not only all of training camp but probably the first couple of games of the regular season.

The Suns said in a brief statement that the surgery was performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Steven Shin to repair the fifth metacarpop­halangeal joint.

Hood reups with Cavaliers.

Restricted free agent forward Rodney Hood resigned with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Hood joined the Cavaliers at the trade deadline last season, coming from Utah. The 6foot8 Hood was offered a $3.4 million qualifying offer from Cleveland in June.

Galaxy coach Schmid is out.

ANGELES» LA Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid stepped down with just six games remaining in the Major League Soccer season, abruptly ending his second tenure in charge of the winningest franchise in league history.

Schmid, the winningest coach in MLS history, walked away just 42 regularsea­son games into his second stint with his hometown club.

Central Oklahoma football player loses foot.

CITY» Officials OKLAHOMA said a University of Central Oklahoma defensive back lost his foot when he was run over by a train.

Oklahoma City police said 20yearold Derek Loccident tried to crawl under a stopped train early Sunday when the train started moving. Police say the train severed Loccident’s foot, but he was able to flag down a nearby person who took him to a hospital. Police said he is expected to survive. — The Associated Press
