NFL Briefs QB DARNOLD RECOVERS AS JETS RUMBLE

» Sam Darnold DETROI T made a stellar debut despite throwing a picksix on his first NFL pass and the Jets intercepte­d five passes while routing the Lions 4817 in their season opener Monday night.

The 21yearold Darnold became the youngest quarterbac­k to start a season opener since the 1970 AFLNFL merger, and he got off to an inauspicio­us start. Quandre Diggs intercepte­d his illadvised lob down the left sideline on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown 20 seconds into the game.

The former USC star shook off the rough start by completing 16of21 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns. He helped the Jets set a franchise record for points on the road, surpassing the 47 points they scored in 1967 against the Boston Patriots, and outplayed Matthew Stafford.

Lynch sits for anthem.

Raiders

. running back Marshawn Lynch sat during the national anthem ahead of the team’s season opener Monday night.

Lynch declined to stand for the anthem before a home game against the Rams. No other players on either team demonstrat­ed during the anthem.

Rodgers’ status TBD.

Packers

G R EEN BAY , WI S. coach Mike McCarthy said he needs more informatio­n on the extent of Aaron Rodgers’ knee injury to determine the quarterbac­k’s availabili­ty for next week’s game against Minnesota.

Rodgers was sore when the team returned to Lambeau Field on Monday, McCarthy said. The Packers reviewed the thrilling 2423 win on Sunday night over the Bears, in which Rodgers threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter after returning from an injury. Threetime Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker will have surgery on his right ankle in the next few days, and coach Mike Vrabel said the Titans will decide if the veteran might be able to return later this season.

The Titans placed Walker on injured reserve.
