Man’s felony charges include murder
A man faces 22 felony charges — including eight murder counts — in connection with an August shooting in Aurora that killed two people and injured three, including an officer responding to the incident.
Prosecutors charged Demarcus Dlaurence BrownJones, 28, on Tuesday with a long list of felony charges, including four counts of firstdegree murder, one count of attempted firstdegree murder of a peace officer, three counts of attempted firstdegree murder, one count of firstdegree assault of a peace officer, three counts of firstdegree assault as well as single counts of child abuse and harassment.
He also faces seven counts of crime of violence, which act as sentencing enhancers, according to a news release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
The two people killed in the shooting were Aurora residents: 25yearold Anthoni Readus and 19yearold Wayne Carter, according to the Office of the Coroner for Adams and Broomfield counties.
Few details were available about BrownJones’ arrest because the affidavit for his arrest remained sealed Tuesday. The district attorney’s office said in the news release that it would not release further information because of the ongoing investigation.
Aurora police officers responded to the shooting at about 5:20 p.m. on Aug. 31 in the 1900 block of Peoria Street, near the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
Two people, including a juvenile, were shot as well as an unidentified officer, who exchanged gunfire with the shooter. The officer was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously injured.
