ATHLETICS’ MANAEA DONE FOR SEASON

-

If the Athletics are to advance in October, they’ll have to do it without Sean Manaea.

Manaea, who threw a nohitter against Boston this season, joined Oakland’s list of pitchers lost to seasonending surgery when the team announced Tues day that the lefty was done for the year because of shoulder trouble.

The playoffcontending A’s said Manaea, on the disabled list since Aug. 26, will have an operation to repair a left shoulder impingement on Sept. 19 at the CedarsSinai KerlanJobe Institute in Los Angeles.

The 26yearold Manaea went 129 with a 3.59 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 160M innings this year. He pitched a nohitter at home against the Red Sox on April 21, fanning 10.

The A’s entered the day trailing firstplace Houston by three games in the AL West. They also were three games behind the Yankees for the top spot in the wildcard standings.

Iwakuma to return to Japan.

Mariners righthanded pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma intends to try to continue his professional career next year pitching in Japan.

The 37yearold Iwakuma has missed the entire 2018 season as he’s tried to recover from major shoulder surgery in September 2017. Iwakuma was hoping to contribute to the Mariners rotation later in the season, but had several setbacks along the way and only pitched in rehab outings in the minors.

Seattle manager Scott Servais said Iwakuma would not pitch for the Mariners in the final few weeks of the regular season.

“I think he saw enough out of his last outing or two that he wants to continue to play, which is a good thing,” Servais said.

Iwakuma pitched six seasons with the Mariners and had a career mark of 6339 with a 3.42 ERA in 150 career games. He threw a nohitter during the 2015 season. — The Associated Press
