» A RANCH O C OR D OVA, C A LIF . Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy has been killed and another wounded after exchanging gunfire with a suspect.

Sheriff Scott Jones says 27yearold Mark Stasyuk died Monday from gunshot wounds. Deputy Julie Robertson was shot in the arm and is expected to recover.

Jones says the two officers were fired at immediatel­y upon engaging with the suspect at an auto shop in Rancho Cordova, Calif. Jones says the officers did not know the suspect was armed when they arrived.

Stasyuk was a nearly five year veteran of the department.

Mueller clears way for Michael Flynn sentencing.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is ready for a judge to sentence former national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to a court document filed Monday.

The move would bring Flynn’s involvemen­t in the Russia investigat­ion to a close nearly a year after he pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with Mueller’s team.

Since Flynn’s plea, prosecutor­s had repeatedly delayed his sentencing as the investigat­ion continued. But in the latest filing , they say they no longer need more time, suggesting that U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan set a date in late November or early December.

Red Cross says Boko Haram has killed aid worker.

Haram extremists have killed a Red Cross worker who was abducted earlier this year during an attack in the Kala Balge government area in northern Nigeria’s Borno State, the Internatio­nal Committee of the Red Cross said Monday.

“The Internatio­nal Committee of the Red Cross condemns in the strongest terms the tragic killing of its abducted colleague Saifura Hussaini Ahmed Khorsa,” the group said in a statement.

Khorsa was kidnapped in March along with two other health workers after an attack on a military facility in the town of Rann in Kala Balge area that left at least four soldiers and police officers dead.

Israeli fire wounds dozens in Gaza as thousands protest.

» Gaza’s Health Ministry says 26 Palestinia­ns were wounded by Israeli gunfire during a mass protest on the border with Israel.

Thousands gathered Monday on the beach along the border fence separating the Gaza Strip and Israel to demonstrat­e against Egypt and Israel’s blockade.

The Israeli military says protesters burned tires and threw rocks and explosives at troops on the border, who responded with tear gas and live fire.

Hamas, the Islamic militant group ruling Gaza since 2007, has led weekly protests since March to lift the blockade that has crippled the territory’s economy.

Israeli fire has killed at least 131 Palestinia­ns since protests began. Hamas is widening protests as Egyptianme­diated ceasefire negotiatio­ns have stalled.

Body recovered from bottom of Grand Canyon.

A body has been recovered from the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Little informatio­n was available Monday on the person found downstream of Phantom Ranch.

Grand Canyon spokeswoma­n Perri Spreiser says the body was recovered Friday and taken to a medical examiner’s office for positive identifica­tion.

The body could be that of a man reporting missing from a river trip earlier this month.
