JUDGE, CHAPMAN MAKE FINAL PREP

MLB Briefs

-

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge had 11 atbats in a simulated game and New York closer Aroldis Chapman threw 22 pitches, perhaps the last steps before both are cleared to return to full action.

The team said Judge faced righthanders A.J. Cole and Chance Adams along with minorleague lefthander Phillip Diehl at Yankee Stadium on Monday. Judge is recovering from a broken right wrist, suffered when he was hit by a pitch from Kansas City’s Jakob Junis on July 26.

Judge’s only majorleague action since then was two innings in right field on Friday night.

Chapman threw to Tyler Wade and Kyle Higashioka. He has not pitched in a game since Aug. 21 because of left knee tendinitis.

The team said Judge and Chapman did not have any issues. Manager Aaron Boone said last weekend that Judge and Chapman could return during the threegame series against Boston scheduled to start Tuesday. The Red Sox can clinch the AL East by winning any of the games in New York, while the Yankees hold the top AL wildcard spot.

Teacher throws out first pitch.

CHICAGO» A suburban Indianapolis teacher who was shot in May while tackling a student who opened fire inside his classroom threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Wrigley Field before Sunday’s CubsReds game.

Jason Seaman wore a No. 18 jersey with his name on the back when he took to the pitcher’s mound before the game, which the Reds won 21.

Authorities say a 13yearold boy entered Seaman’s classroom at Noblesville West Middle School on May 25 and opened fire, wounding Seaman and a student, 13yearold Ella Whistler.

Seaman, a seventhgrade science teacher, tackled the teen and stopped the attack at the school about 20 miles north of Indianapolis.

The accused teen’s attorney says he’ll admit to carrying out the attack during a November juvenile court hearing.

Tigers’ Fulmer seeks second opinion.

DETROIT» Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer is seeking a second opinion after an MRI showed possible damage to the righthander’s meniscus.

Manager Ron Gardenhire gave that update on Fulmer’s status before Monday night’s game against Minnesota. Fulmer was removed after five pitches Saturday at Cleveland. He tweaked his right knee trying to field a bunt attempt.

Fulmer, the 2016 AL rookie of the year, is 312 with a 4.69 ERA this season. He’s had health issues over the past couple years, spending time on the disabled list with elbow and oblique problems.

Twins’ Rosario hurts quad.

Minnesota left fielder Eddie Rosario left Monday night’s game at Detroit after aggravating a right quadriceps injury.

Rosario fell while fielding Jim Adduci’s single to left in the bot tom of the fourth, and he stayed on the ground. He attempted to flip the ball to center fielder Jake Cave, but that effort was a bit off target, and it took a moment for Cave to retrieve the ball and throw it back toward the infield. A run scored on the play, and Adduci ended up on third.

Rosario was charged with an error. He remained down for a bit but was eventually able to walk toward the dugout under his own power.

Rosario hit his 24th home run of the season in the first inning.

Yankees’ callups.

Pitchers Justus Sheffield and Domingo German will join the Yankees for Tuesday’s game. The lefthanded Sheffield is one of New York’s top starting pitching prospects.
