GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL: 30 Colorado breweries claim 32 medals in competitio­n

Denver Beer Co. won two gold medals in the Great American Beer Festival awards handed out Saturday morning at the annual festival at the Colorado Convention Center.

The 7yearold brewery won for its flagship beer, “Graham Cracker Porter,” and a barrelaged beer called “Barrelage Ja pance Off.” It is the third year in a row for a gold medal for Denver Beer Co. The brewery won a bronze medal in 2011 for “Graham Cracker Porter.”

“It’s fantastic,” said head brewer Jason Buehler. “It goes to show that if you work hard, it pays off. This says a lot for our whole team.”

Thirty Colorado breweries took home a total of 32 gold, silver or bronze medals at the festival, which ended its threeday run Saturday. In all, 306 medals were handed out in 102 categories covering 167 different beer styles to a total of 280 breweries.

In addition to the named categories, New Belgium Brewing Co. in Fort Collins won a gold medal for its collaborat­ion with Oud Beersel from Beersel, Belgium, on Transatlan­tic Kriek. And Cheluna Brewing Co. in Aurora won a bronze in the Proam category for a brew that was made in collaborat­ion with homebrewer Chris Cardillo.

• Canonball Creek Brewing Co. (Golden), gold for “Netflix and Pils,” Germanstyl­e Pilsener.

• Cheluna Brewing Co. (Aurora), bronze for ProAm Collaborat­ion.

• Cogstone Brewing (Colorado Springs), bronze for “Chips and Salsa Cream Ale,” Experiment­al Beer.

• Comrade Brewing Co. (Denver), bronze for “Defcon Red,” Irishstyle Red Ale.

• Crow Hop Brewing Co. (Loveland), bronze for “Kneeknocke­r Porter,” Brown Porter.

• Denver Beer Co. (Denver), gold for “Barrelaged Japance Off” Barrelaged beer.
