DENVER USED CAR BUYERS FAVOR FOREIGN MAKERS

- — Aldo Svaldi, The Denver Post

One useful piece of information that can help consumers negotiate is knowing which used car models turn over quickly and which ones languish — and that can vary from city to city.

The Mercedes Benz CLA was the fastest moving used car in metro Denver the first half of this year, spending an average 29.9 days on the lot until a purchase, according to a new study from iSeeCars.com

Other used models that turned quickly in metro Denver included the Honda CRV at 32 days; the Toyota Prius at 33.3 days; the Honda Civic at 34.2 days; and the Toyota RAV 4 at 34.9 days.

At the other extreme were domestic models, led by the Ford Edge, which took nearly 62 days to sell on average. Three Jeep models were also laggards in Denver to a much greater degree than was the case nationally.

They included the Renegade at 56.3 days on the lot, the Wrangler Unlimited at 55.2 days, and the Grand Cherokee at 49.4 days.

“The Wrangler Unlimited is a slowseller in a number of markets/states, and we inferred that it was because it bills itself as a familyfriendly car, but doesn’t have the best reliability/safety ratings,” said Julie Blackley, a spokeswoman for iSeeCars.

But it could also be that dealers are mispricing them. Jeep models tend to see less depreciation, which could be pushing more potential customers to buy new.

Two Chevrolets — the Malibu at 54.2 days and the Tahoe at

53.9 days — also were slow movers in Denver.

Out of the 4 million used car sales that iSeeCars.com studied nationally, the model that moved fastest was the Toyota Prius C at 29.6 days. The vehicle that took the longest time to sell was the expensive Porsche Cayenne at 67.8 days.
