More than 6 million pounds of beef processed at an Arizona meat packing plant is being recalled because of salmonella contamination.
JBS Tolleson Inc., whose parent JBS USA is headquartered in Greeley, packaged the beef products, including ground beef, on various dates from July 26 to Sept. 7, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service news release.
The recall is for 6,500,966 pounds of various raw beef products that may be contaminated, food safety officials said. The products bear establishment number “EST. 267” inside the USDA mark of inspection, and they’ve been shipped to retail locations and institutions across the U.S.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state public health and agriculture partners have determined that raw ground beef was the probable source of the reported illnesses.
The epidemiological investigation has identified 57 casepatients from 16 states with illness onset dates ranging from Aug. 5 to Sept. 6, the news release said. In September, Cargill Meat Solutions of Fort Morgan recalled 66.3 tons of ground beef products after an E. coli contamination outbreak connected to one death and 17 illnesses.
Food safety officials advise consumers to make sure ground beef has been cooked to a temperature of 160 degrees. Other beef cuts should be cooked to a temperature of 145 degrees and allowed to rest for at least three minutes. A food thermometer should be used to ensure that cooked meats reach a safe temperature.
