EAGLECREST EXECS PLACED ON LEAVE

The principal and the athletic director at Eaglecrest High School in Centennial have been placed on administra­tive leave because of a football player who took the field last year despite being ineligible.

Principal Gwen HansenVigi­l and athletic director Vince Orlando were made aware of the player’s ineligibil­ity last year “and chose not to take action,” according to a letter from Cherry Creek Schools Superinten­dent Scott Siegfried to Eaglecrest parents.

The Colorado High School Activities Associatio­n (CHSAA) is imposing sanctions against the school for the rules violation, according to the letter. The ineligible player participat­ed in four Eaglecrest games last season: two varsity and two junior varsity outings.

UCLA freshman to miss season.

YORK» The father of a bluechip NEW college basketball recruit testified that an assistant coach at the University of Louisville gave him a secret payment of $1,300 as part of a deal to get the son to sign with the school.

At a criminal trial about corruption in bigtime basketball, Brian Bowen Sr. described setting up two meetings with assistant Kenny Johnson via text in 2017 to try to collect cash in violation of school and NCAA rules.

Bowen testified that the first time, Johnson was “shocked” and “flabbergas­ted” when he told him that defendant Christian Dawkins had promised that the coach would help the father with paying rent. The next time, he said, Johnson handed over $1,300 — reluctantl­y.

UCLA freshman to miss season.

UCLA freshman guard Tyger Campbell has a torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the upcoming season, making him the third player to be sidelined.

The school said Campbell got hurt in practice Sunday.

He averaged 15.5 points and 7.2 assists as a senior at La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., while leading the team to a 234 record last season.

Walsh Jennings picks new partner.

Threetime Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, already the most decorated beach volleyball player in history, will pair with defensive star Brooke Sweat in an attempt to make it to the Summer Games for a sixth time.

The decision kicks off a twoyear qualificat­ion process that would send Walsh Jennings to Tokyo in 2020 a month before she turns 42. Sweat, eight years younger, is a fourtime AVP defensive player of the year who competed in Rio de Janeiro in her only Olympics.

Concussion sidelines Penguins goalie Murray.

PITTSBURGH» Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray is out indefinite­ly with a concussion.

Coach Mike Sullivan said Murray suffered the concussion during practice Monday and reported potential symptoms to the training staff immediatel­y afterward. Sullivan did not offer specifics on the nature of the contact that led to the injury.

This is the third time in his NHL career the 24yearold Murray has been diagnosed with a concussion. He suffered one in practice last February and missed nearly a month. He also suffered a concussion late in the 201516 season when he collided with Philadelph­ia’s Brayden Schenn.

Padres fired hitting coach Stairs.

In an almost annual exercise, the San Diego Padres are searching for a new hitting coach after Matt Stairs was fired after just one year on the job.

The rebuilding Padres continued to rank at or near the bottom of the majors in key offensive stats under Stairs.

His replacemen­t will be the Padres’ 10th hitting coach since Petco Park opened in 2004.
