BP contributes $350,000 to help the city’s homeless.

BP’s Lower 48 onshore operations, which recently moved its U.S. headquarters to Denver, is contributing $350,000 to cover the electric and gas utility costs for local homeless shelters for the next 12 months.

Mayor Michael Hancock said the donation, made Wednesday on World Homeless Day, will allow shelters to shift the money that would pay for utilities toward “more and better services that empower shelter guests out of home lessness.”

“Each night, more than 1,700 people, on average, are accessing shelters in our city, and our goal is for those same shelters to be the front doors to housing and other resources that help them achieve stability,” Hancock said in a statement.

Laura Leffler, the energy company’s chief of staff, said contributing to Denver’s Road Home program for the homeless is a great way to give back to the community.

Denver’s Road Home coordinates services for people experiencing homelessness.

It will distribute the funds to nonprofit organizations it contracts with to provide warm, safe spaces for overnight lodging and other humanitarian assistance.
