Roby returns to practice after illness

- By Kyle Fredrickson

Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby missed team meetings Monday with an illness.

Then the fifthyear pro began receiving messages from teammates asking for his whereabouts after what’s been described as a “communication error” that left many within the organization in the dark.

“The coach told them that nobody knew where I was at,” Roby said Wednesday.

Roby returned in full to practice and team meetings Wednesday. Coach Vance Joseph said punishment for the mishap has “been discussed in house and fixed internally.” Roby admitted to frustration over his play in Sunday’s loss. He said: “I did not have a good game, I didn’t perform well, I sucked actually. … I have to just win my battles.”

However, Roby reiterated that his poor play Sunday was not the cause for his absence from the facility Monday afternoon.

“I got sick after the game probably within an hour of getting home,” Roby said. “I wasn’t feeling well and didn’t get a lot of sleep. My body was throwing up like crazy, man, I don’t know what it was or maybe something I ate.”

Roby told reporters Wednesday that he informed the team medical staff Monday morning that he would seek treatment that afternoon. “Somehow that didn’t get communicated to everyone or the right people,” Roby said. “People thought I just didn’t show and that’s not true at all.”

Joseph confirmed Roby will remain the No. 2 starting corner back Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams and their No. 2 rated passing offense (337.2 yards/ game).

“I just try to encourage him. It’s on him, though. You have to be a man,” cornerback Chris Harris said. “Cornerback, it’s 1 on 1 a lot of the time. You can control a lot of things on your own out there. You have to look yourself in the mirror and (ask), ‘How bad do you want it?’ If Rob wants it bad enough, he’ll bounce back.”

Added Joseph: “Roby didn’t play his best on Sunday. That’s obvious, but he played pretty well the week before. We have to get him back and keep coaching him. He’s ours. He’s our guy. So we’ll get him back to playing good football.”

Footnotes.

Three players did not participate in practice Wednesday: right tackle Jared Veldheer (knee), cornerback Adam Jones (thigh) and safety Darian Stewart (foot) … Two players were limited Wednesday with injuries: left tackle Garett Bolles (ankle) and wide receiver Courtland Sutton (ankle) … The Rams are listed as a 7point favorite, per VegasInsiders.com, to mark the biggest home underdog for Denver (not including Patriots games) since at least 1995.
