FIGHTERS SUSPENDED FOR AT LEAST 10 DAYS

VEGAS» UFC fighters Khabib NurLAS magomedov and Conor McGregor are being suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for a brawl that erupted inside and outside the octagon after their lightweigh­t title fight last weekend in Las Vegas, an official said.

Letters were sent Wednesday informing both mixed martial arts fighters that they will be suspended for at least 10 days effective Oct. 15, commission executive Bob Bennett said Thursday.

A commission investigat­ion is pending and the panel can extend the temporary suspension when it meets Oct. 24, Bennett said. Nurmagomed­ov and McGregor could also appeal Bennett’s executive action at that time.

Nurmagomed­ov, who was praised by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting Wednesday in Moscow, responded with an angry Instagram post saying he was being unfairly punished.

Mahomes may be going to prom.

MO.» Kansas City Chiefs KANSAS CITY, quarterbac­k Patrick Mahomes isn’t ruling out a prom date with a 17yearold girl with a severe physical disability after she posted a widely circulated “promposal” video to Facebook.

Mahomes said he’ll see if he can make the date with CeeCee Campbell happen when prom comes around in April. The RaymorePec­uliar (Mo.) High School student was born with arthrogryp­osis, which affects her joints and leaves her with limited mobility.

She says in the video that a date with Mahomes would make her “feel like all the normal girls who gets their dream proms.”

Mahomes says his mother sent him the video.

U.S. soccer team falls to Colombia.

Falcao and Miguel Borja scored secondhalf goals to lead Colombia over the United States 42 in an exhibition that marked the return of American captain Michael Bradley to the national team following a oneyear absence.

James Rodriguez put Colombia ahead with a pretty curling shot from just inside the penalty area in the 36th, but the U.S. regrouped and took a 21 lead on goals by Kellyn Acosta in the 50th minute and Bobby Wood in the 53rd.

Texas Tech defeats TCU.

Jett Duffey scored on a 38yard quarterbac­k draw with seven minutes left, holding on to the ball just long enough for the goahead score in Texas Tech’s 1714 victory over TCU.

And in San Marcos, Wesley Fields rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown, helping Georgia Southern beat Texas State 1513.

Kerr, Wright join U.S. hoops staff.

Steve Kerr and Jay Wright will be assistant coaches for the U.S. national basketball team, putting the coaches of the NBA and NCAA championsh­ip teams on Gregg Popovich’s staff.

Nate McMillan will be the other assistant, USA Basketball announced.

The trio of coaches will work with Popovich in the 2019 Basketball World Cup and 2020 Olympics, assuming the Americans qualify for both events.

Kerr has led Golden State to two straight and three of the last four NBA championsh­ips. Wright guided Villanova to the 2016 and 2018 NCAA titles. McMillan worked on Mike Krzyzewski’s U.S. staff from 200612.

Trailblaze­r Ashworth dies at 80.

Jeanne Ashworth, the first American woman to win an Olympic speedskati­ng medal, has died. She was 80.

The website of the Heald Funeral Home in Elizabetht­own, N.Y., said she died at home Oct. 4 of pancreatic cancer.

Ashworth competed in three Olympics, winning the 500meter bronze at Squaw Valley, Calif., in 1960.
