KEENUM, ON BOOS: “WE HAVE TO DO BETTER”

-

The first noticeable boos directed toward Broncos quarterback Case Keenum followed his overthrow to tight end Matt LaCosse early in Sunday’s second quarter.

The boos continued near halftime when Keenum was sacked but were quickly replaced by cheers when Chad Kelly took the final snap (a kneeldown) while Keenum was being evaluated for a concussion.

After the Broncos’ 2320 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Keenum said he noticed the jeers.

“Yeah, I heard it,” he said. “It’s not the first time the crowd has been unhappy with what’s going on. They should be (upset).

“We have to do better. We keep saying it. We have to do it. Whatever the plays are that we need to make, we need to make them. And I see us doing that going forward.”

Keenum’s ledger against the Rams included 322 yards passing (25of41) but also his eighth interception. He had seven all of last year for Minnesota.

“It was a play we had run earlier and had a guy (tight end Brian Parker) we thought we could get open down the middle of the field,” Keenum said. “I tried to take a shot, and it was one of my bad decisions. … Again, another turnover in the red zone we need to eliminate.”

Getting aggressive.

Coach Vance Joseph said a part of the Broncos’ offensive game plan was to take “five or six” shots downfield.

Keenum was able to connect for gains of 45 (Demaryius Thomas), 43 (Emmanuel Sanders) and 41 (Courtland Sutton) yards.

It was the first time since 2007 and only the fourth time since 1991 that the Broncos had three passing plays of at least 40 yards.

“That was the plan: Push the ball down the field, especially (to Sutton),” Joseph said. “That guy, he’s catching the ball or it’s going to be a penalty.”

Injury report.

Six Broncos players were evaluated for injuries. Left guard Ron Leary is “feared” to have a torn Achilles tendon, according to a source, and safety Dymonte Thomas (chest) did not return.

Keenum, defensive end Derek Wolfe (hamstring), linebacker Shane Ray (ankle) and defensive tackle Shelby Harris (undisclosed) were shaken up but returned.

Wolfe was injured early, which limited his effectiveness when he returned.

“I couldn’t open up like I wanted to because, mentally, I didn’t want to pull it,” Wolfe said. “But it wasn’t even hurting (after the game).”

Footnotes.

Broncos cornerback Adam Jones (thigh) and right tackle Jared Veldheer (knee) did not play. A healthy scratch for the sixth time in as many games this year were quarterback Kevin Hogan, defensive end DeMarcus Walker, linebacker Alexander Johnson and center/guard Sam Jones. … Linebacker Von Miller, when asked if fans are losing faith: “I’ll never attack Broncos fans. They’ve been through thick and thin with me and are loyal as heck. I can’t believe they’re losing hope right now. We still have a long season to go.”
