Rams need to make most of chances
BOISE, IDAHO» Take ’em where you find them.
That’s Colorado State’s approach when it comes to opportunities on the road Friday at Boise State (7 p.m., ESPN2). Trouble is, the Rams have misfired more often than they’d like this year, and the Broncos aren’t the kind of team that makes a habit of presenting them.
That’s why CSU head coach Mike Bobo knows it’s more imperative the Rams do their best in the eighth week of the season.
“I think your opportunities are going to be limited when you’re playing a very good team, and we definitely have to limit theirs,” Bobo said.
The past two weeks — both Colorado State victories — the Rams’ offense walked off the field convinced it had left points there instead of on the scoreboard. Some of those chances have been obvious, like Preston Williams’ drop of a perfectly placed deep ball by K.J. CartaSamuels last week. Some of them are lost in the shuffle of a missed block, a poor route or the wrong read.
No matter the reason, the chance is gone.
“As college football players, you want to make those plays,” CSU tight end Cam Butler said. “Of course every time they’re not going to be perfect, but when they come to you, you have to make the play count. You never know when you’re going to get it again, especially against a team like this. We’ve got to do good on our opportunities this Friday to give us the best chance possible.”
It has resulted in the Rams being less explosive than in the past, and it’s a byproduct of losing a ton of experience. A bunch of it up front, a threeyear starter at quarterback and at running back. Those are facts.
With a bit of momentum from a twogame winning streak, the Rams are aware they need to start cashing in more of the chances.
“We do have some momentum. That’s the thing, it really is just about putting the pieces together that night,” CartaSamuels said.
It’s just not that easy against a Boise State defense that gives an offense plenty of looks to ponder. The Broncos are not easy to run against, pass against or score against, ranking in the top four of the Mountain West across the board.
