ARENADO, LEMAHIEU GOLD GLOVE FINALISTS

The Rockies’ infield glittered in 2018. So it came as no surprise that third baseman Nolan Arenado and second baseman DJ LeMahieu were named as Rawlings Gold Glove finalists on Thursday.

The Gold Glove Award is given to players for overall fielding excellence in both leagues and is voted on by the managers and coaches. Winners will be announced on Nov. 4.

A win by Arenado would be his sixth Gold Glove in a row. Arenado’s competitor­s in the National League are Washington’s Anthony Rendon and Milwaukee’s Travis Shaw.

LeMahieu, who won Gold Gloves in 2014 and 2017, faces stiff competitio­n from St. Louis’ Kolten Wong and Javier Baez of the Chicago Cubs. LeMahieu is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the month.

Twins tap Baldelli.

The Minnesota Twins have hired Tampa Bay Rays assistant coach Rocco Baldelli as their new manager. The 37yearold Baldelli replaces Paul Molitor, who was fired after four seasons with a 305343 record. Baldelli spent the last four years on the staff of Rays manager Kevin Cash. Baldelli will be the youngest manager in the major leagues.

Blue Jays pick Montoyo.

The Toronto Blue Jays have hired Charlie Montoyo as their manager. He succeeds John Gibbons, who was let go after a 7389 season. The team says Montoya has a threeyear contract with a club option for 2022. Montoyo is a 53yearold Puerto Rican who worked as the bench coach for the Tampa Bay Rays this season.

Report says Maryland football program had problems.

An external investigat­ion of the Maryland football program under coach DJ Durkin has determined that the team “did not have a toxic culture,” but was problemati­c enough to where players feared speaking out.

The 198page report, which was obtained by The Associated Press, was compiled by an independen­t commission of eight people and said the culture of the program was not the reason behind the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair. The report did not include any recommenda­tions about Durkin’s status — he has been on paid administra­tive leave since Aug. 11.

Wilson’s 20game suspension upheld.

YORK» Washington CapiNEW tals forward Tom Wilson’s 20game suspension for an illegal check to an opponent’s head in a preseason game was upheld by NHL Commission­er Gary Bettman on Thursday.

Jordan invests in esports.

A quarter century after being famously excluded from the cult favorite video game NBA Jam, Michael Jordan is investing in esports. Jordan on Thursday was announced as an investor with aXiomatic, a major esports ownership group whose properties include powerhouse franchise Team Liquid.
