A 37yearold Lakewood man has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of his 70yearold mother.

James Andrew Navarro on Thursday pleaded guilty in Jefferson County District Court to attempted seconddegree murder, according to the district attorney’s office.

In February, police were called to a home he shared with his mother, Ruth Navarro, in the 1300 block of Zephyr Street, on an assault, according to a news release. Ruth Navarro suffered multiple face injuries in the attack by her son.

Prior to the attack, James Navarro had “threatened and harassed his mother,” prosecutors said.

The day of the attack, Ruth Navarro had left the home, out of fear, and the assailant followed her outside where he threw her to the ground, repeatedly punched her in the face and strangled her, the news release said. A man came to her aid and 911 was called.

During the attack, Ruth Navarro suffered a fractured orbital bone, had a tooth knocked out and her elbow fractured, among other injuries.

Sentencing has been scheduled for Dec. 10. He faces a prison sentence of 10 to 22 years.

Man, 23, arrested Sunday in Aurora as suspect in Denver shooting death.

A suspect has been arrested in a fatal shooting in Denver and the incident allegedly started with an argument about a parked vehicle being dinged.

Benard Reed, 23, is suspected in the death of Os car Hernandez, 39, in the 3400 block of West Kentucky Avenue, according to police. The shooting happened at about 8:45 p.m. Friday.

Reed was arrested on Sunday at a residence in Aurora, police said.

The incident unfolded, according to an arrest warrant, when a Lincoln Navigator parked next to a fourdoor Honda and a passenger opened a door on the Lincoln multiple times, dinging the Honda. The driver of the Honda, a woman, got out of her vehicle and went to the driver’s side of the Lincoln to talk about the door dings.

An argument ensued and the driver of the Lincoln, identified by police as Reed, allegedly punched the woman in the face. Hernandez intervened and was shot by Reed who then fled, police said.

Hernandez drove himself to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:26 p.m., according to the arrest warrant.

Reed is being held on suspicion of firstdegree murder, assault and on outstanding warrants, police said.

Wolf Creek Ski Area removes 4,000 beetlekilled trees. DURANGO»

Wolf Creek Ski Area in Pagosa Springs says it has removed an estimated 4,000 trees killed by spruce beetles over about 150 acres.

Owner Davey Pitcher told The Durango Herald that the removal mitigated some of the fire danger at the southwestern Colorado resort and also got rid of hazardous trees.

But he says it also allowed a new ski lift to be built and created some new beginner and intermediate trails.
