LeMahieu named best 2B in the game

- By Patrick Saunders

If DJ LeMahieu has indeed played his final game in a Rockies uniform, the second baseman is departing with quite a legacy.

Wednesday, LeMahieu was honored by Wilson as the best second baseman in the majors. It was the third time LeMahieu, 30, has won the award. On Sunday, he was awarded a Rawlings Gold Glove for the third time, recognizing him as the best second baseman in the National League.

And don’t forget that LeMahieu was the 2016 NL batting champion when he hit .348.

LeMahieu, however, is a free agent, and thus far there have been no talks with the Rockies about keeping him in Colorado.

Oakland 25-year-old third baseman Matt Chapman, a first- time winner, was named Wilson’s best third baseman, supplanting Colorado’s Nolan Arenado, who won the award each of the last three years. Chapman also was named the majors’ best overall defensive player.

Chapman and Arenado have a shared history. Arenado was a highly recruited senior shortstop at El Toro High School in Lake Forest, Calif., in 2009. His backup on that team, an undersized sophomore who only played shortstop when Arenado pitched, was Chapman.

The Arizona Diamondbacks were named the defensive team of the year for the second time in four seasons.

Winners of the Wilson awards, for both individual positions and the team award, are determined using a formula that combines traditional defensive stats with advanced metrics.
