RAMS ROUT CCU IN COACH’S FIRST GAME

COLLINS» Freshman FORT guard Kendle Moore scored 26 points and junior guard Anthony Bonner added 22 as Colorado State routed Colorado Christian 100-66 on Wednesday night at Moby Arena in the first game of the Niko Medved coaching era for the Rams.

Junior center Nico Carvacho scored 14 points and had a game-high 15 rebounds for the Rams, who next host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The CCU Cougars, from Lakewood, were led by senior guard Collin Huun, who came off the bench to score 21 points. CCU plays Friday at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas.

No. 20 TCU 66,

Cal State Bakersfield 61.

Desmond Bane scored 13 of his 14 points after halftime as No. 20 TCU rallied.

Bane’s tiebreaking driving layup with 2:48 left finally put TCU ahead to stay. The Horned Frogs had trailed by as many as 11 points before halftime.

TCU played an opener as a ranked team for the first time in 20 seasons, since 1998-99. That was after the Horned Frogs had gone to the 1998 NCAA Tournament, their last one before making it last March in the second season for coach Jamie Dixon at his alma mater.

Jarkel Joiner had 18 points and Damiyne Durham 11 for Bakersfield. Both had three 3-pointers.

JD Miller had 13 points for TCU, while Alex Robinson had 12 points.

Arizona 90, Houston Baptist 60.

TUCSON» Brandon Randolph scored 25 points, Brandon Williams added 13 and Arizona opened the season with a win.

The Wildcats, unranked for the first time since 2010 after a major roster overhaul, had some shaky moments early but turned a nine-point halftime lead into a rout quickly in the second half.

Arizona struggled shooting from the perimeter, going 6-for-22 from the 3-point line, but hounded the Huskies on defense all night to extend its nonconference home winning streak to 48 straight games.

Jalon Gates led Houston Baptist with 12 points.

Using its size, Arizona held Houston Baptist scoreless for nearly 3½ minutes to open the game.
