Rockies’ Black No. 3 in National League

- By Patrick Saunders

Bud Black led the Rockies to places they had never been before, but his stewardship was not enough for him to be named National League manager of the year.

That award was bestowed on Atlanta’s Brian Snitker, who guided the Braves to an 18-win improvement, as well as their first NL East title and their first postseason appearance since 2013. Milwaukee’s Craig Counsell, who led the Brewers to the NL Central title, finished second, while Black was third in voting released Tuesday. The A’s Bob Melvin won the AL award.

Snitker got 17 of 30 first-place votes, Counsell received 11 and Black got one. Snitker is the Braves’ first manager of the year since Bobby Cox won the award in 2004 and 2005. The award is voted on by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Black, a former big-league pitcher who also was a finalist last season, led the Rockies to back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in franchise history. Colorado was eight games out of first place in the National League West on June 28, but the Rockies rebounded to win 91 games and tied with the Dodgers for the division title. Los Angeles beat the Rockies 5-2 in the tie-breaker game to capture its sixth consecutive NL West title. The Rockies have never done that.

The Rockies went on to beat the Cubs 2-1 in 13 innings in the wild-card game to advance to the NL division series. The Rockies’ season ended with a three-game sweep by Counsell’s Brewers.
