2 injured in school bus collision in heavy fog

- By Kirk Mitchell

A bus driver and a truck driver were injured early Tuesday morning when a school bus crashed into a semi-tractor trailer truck in heavy fog on a rural Weld County road, authorities say.

Two middle school students who were riding the full-sized bus at the time of the crash were not injured. They were evaluated by Mountain View Fire Rescue paramedics.

The conditions of the bus and truck drivers were not immediately known, Mountain View Chief Roger Rademacher said. Both were taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland for medical treatment, he said.

Colorado 66 and Weld County Road 13 were closed because of the collision.

The school bus was northbound on Weld County Road 13 at 7:29 a.m. at the intersection of Colorado 66 and Weld County Road 13 when the crash happened, Rademacher said.

He said he did not know which direction the semi truck was headed at the time of the crash.

The truck veered into a farm field after the crash, said Cmdr. Mike Lee of the fire department.

Heavy fog blanketed the intersection at the time of the crash, Rademacher said.

There is a red light at the intersection. It’s unclear who ran the red light and caused the crash, he said.

After the crash, the truck driver crawled out of the truck on his own, a fire department tweet said.

Another school vehicle picked up the students and took them to class, Lee said.
