Man shot by Denver police arrested in assault case

- By Kirk Mitchell

A man shot by police after he threatened his wife with a gun and accused her of an affair with her ex-husband has been arrested for investigation of first-degree assault, authorities say.

Juan Sanchez Jimenez, 26, also is being held for investigation of menacing after a Tuesday night confrontation with two police officers, according to a Wednesday news release issued by Denver police.

The two officers who shot Jimenez several times have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a shooting investigation.

The officers have not been named. One of the officers suffered a hearing injury caused by the loud sound of the gunshots, the news release said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital with several wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening, Denver Police Deputy Chief Barb Archer said.

Officers were called to a home in the 13900 block of East Randolph Place at about 8 p.m. Jimenez’s wife had called 911 and reported a gunshot, she said.

The woman claimed that her ex-husband sent messages and pictures depicting their affair to Jimenez, who then showed the pictures to his wife, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. “I don’t know if I’m gonna kill you or him,” Jimenez allegedly told his wife, according to the affidavit.

He then went into his bedroom, got his gun and loaded it. He walked to the secondfloor landing near the stairs and struck his wife in the head with the gun, the affidavit says. Jimenez then point- ed the gun at her and fired a bullet just as she scrambled out of the way, it says.

When the two officers approached the home, the suspect was still armed with a gun, Archer said.

The officers opened fire, striking the man several times. The woman who was inside the home was not injured, she said.
