“Colorado lawmaker wants to let lottery money be used for education,” Feb. 12 news story
A suggestion for Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, RSterling: If you want to gain statewide support for transferring funds from Great Outdoors Colorado to education, do not say things like “Truly, do we have enough outhouses and soccer fields?”
Logan County has received more than $3 million from GOCO. That money went to such things as playground equipment at several schools, improvements to the county fairgrounds, and land preservation. I trust he has no objections to such projects, and they are similar to how GOCO money has been utilized throughout Colorado. Also, few who enjoy our state parks would object to such funds going towards modern toilet facilities.
Finally, if more sports fields will get cellular phone and internet addicted kids exercising outdoors, I urge GOGO to keep granting such requests. Although education in Colorado is grossly underfunded, arbitrarily taking funds from highly praised and beneficial Great Outdoors Colorado to “fix” that deficiency is not a wise move. When the Colorado Lottery was approved here, I couldn’t believe that a huge amount of the proceeds was going to parks and recreation. Now years later, millions upon millions have gone towards parks and recreation, and I believe Colorado is ranked 47th for education spending?
Now I see that with the millions being collected from marijuana tax only a small portion of that is being used on education. I think it is time for a change in where monies from these two funds are being distributed. I agree with Sen. Sonnenberg that the issue needs to be put to the voters as to where these funds go.
