Q: WHO KNOWS THE ANSWERS? A: READ OUR LIST

- By Kaitlyn Bancroft

We’ve compiled a list of 10 weekly trivia nights, all free to participate in.

Many trivia nights in Denver are put on in conjunction with Geeks Who Drink, an entertainment company that hosts pub trivia quizzes all over the country. Each of the company’s quizzes consists of eight rounds worth eight points each, with several exceptions. A quiz master reads questions out loud, and teams write down their answers and turn them in at the end of each round.

The first, fourth and sixth rounds are themed (i.e., “TV Shows Your Parents Watch”); the second round is a music round worth double points; the third round is a multiple choice or a speed round; the fifth round is visual and based on a printed handout; the seventh round is entirely audio and usually covers movies or TV shows; and the eighth round is always on random knowledge and worth 16 points. One round can also be “jokered,” meaning points are doubled, and the 16-point rounds aren’t exceptions to this.

Participants can play by themselves or in teams of up to six people, and winning teams get bar cash or other prizes depending on the venue. Trivia topics include everything from bobbleheads to sports law to obscure movie villains who sing.

Geeks Who Drink also holds special themed quiz nights centering around pop culture sensations like “Harry Potter,” “Star Wars,” “Game of Thrones” and “Stranger Things.” (Registration is required for these events; check the schedule at geekswhodrink.com/feature/localthemes.) The next special themed quiz night in Colorado will be a “Lord of the Rings” trivia night at Gunbarrel Brewing Company, located at 7088 Winchester Circle in Boulder.

Additionally, Geeks Who Drink doesn’t repeat questions for at least two years, and even then, “the odds of encountering a repeat are as likely as a manned expedition to Mars discovering the Loch Ness monster there,” according to the company’s website. (Those are 909,000/1 odds, “if you want to put money on it.”)

We’ve compiled a list of 10 weekly trivia nights, all free to participate, but many pubs and other venues still schedule occasional trivia nights. See Geeks Who Drink’s Colorado schedule at geekswhodrink.com/schedule/CO for a complete line-up of the company’s events, or check with your favorite pub or bar to see if they have any upcoming trivia nights.
