REMINGTON, HOMER EXHIBIT DEBUTS IN DENVER
The Denver Art Museum on Tuesday announced a major new exhibition, “Natural Forces: Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington,” running March 15 through June 7, 2020, and featuring 60 of the influential American artists’ works. After Denver, the exhibition will travel to the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine, and the Amon Cater Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. Co-organized by a quartet of curators from the aforementioned institutions, “Natural Forces” hopes to draw thematic and aesthetic connections between the work of Homer (1836-1910) and Remington (1861-1909), whose landscapes and sculptures helped define the way Americans thought about late-19th century art. The exhibition will include a 225-page catalog from Yale Publishing, preceded by a Petrie Institute of Western American Art symposium on Jan. 8, 2020. Dead & Company release Folsom shows.
Colorado Deadheads, rejoice: Dead & Company, the always-touring offshoot of the Grateful Dead with new and original members, added a pair of shows from its University of Colorado Folsom Field stint to its ongoing digital concert series. Along with the Rhino label, the band last month released recordings of all 26 concerts from its 2018 summer tour on digital download and streaming services. High-quality audio versions (Apple Lossless and FLAC formats) are also available via dead.net, the band said, with the July 13-14, 2018 shows from Boulder running $18 to $20 each, depending on the format. Alamo Drafthouse Westminster offers free movies.
The Front Range’s newest movie theater, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Westminster, has wasted no time announcing family-friendly programming following its June 30 grand opening. Its free Summer Movie Nights kicked off July 4 with “Independence Day,” to be followed by “The Sandlot” (July 11), “Coco” (July 18), “The Princess Bride” (July 25), “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (Aug. 1), “Back to the Future” (Aug. 8), “Labyrinth” (Aug. 15), “Hook” (Aug. 22), “Muppets Take Manhattan” (Aug. 29) and “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” (Sept. 5). New hip-hop station from Rocky Mountain Public Media.
Rocky Mountain Public Media, the parent of Rocky Mountain PBS and national jazz-radio mainstay KUVO, is offering a new digital format featuring R&B, urban adult-contemporary and hip-hop targeting young, multicultural audiences in Colorado. The Drop, as it will be known, launched in late June as a commercial-free stream with support from a $350,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Listeners can find the station at thedrop303.org, through the KUVO app or by requesting it via smart speaker. A four-hour daily broadcast is set for later this summer in partnership with Denver Open Media’s radio channel, KOMF 92.9, with live performances on its all-access public TV channel.
