Offseason of shuffling, additions for offensive line

- EDITOR’S By Ryan O’Halloran

Last year’s opening-game left guard is now the right guard and the right guard is now the center.

The left guard played right tackle last year for Kansas State and the right tackle played the same spot, but for the Miami Dolphins.

And for the fifth consecutive year, the Broncos have a new offensive line coach (Mike Munchak).

An offseason of shuffling and adding will begin to take shape when training camp practice opens Thursday.

Shuffled: Connor McGovern, last year’s Week 1 right guard, finished 2018 as the center because of Matt Paradis’ broken leg. McGovern replaces him full-time this year. And Ron Leary, last year’s opening-day left guard, is back at right guard and coming off an Achilles injury.

Added: Dalton Risner was drafted in the second round and was immediately moved from right tackle to left guard. Ja’Wuan James was signed to a $51 million free-agent contract to leave the Dolphins. And, after interviewing for the head-coaching job, Munchak joined the Broncos’ staff.

McGovern, Leary, Risner, James and left tackle Garett Bolles is the projected offensive line for the Sept. 9 opener at Oakland. Except when Leary had his snaps managed, the first-team line did not change during the offseason program.

Point: Bolles gets to work with a Hall of Fame player-turned-respected position coach. Improvement is forthcoming.

Counterpoint: If not this year, then it’s probably never for Bolles.

Following the season, the Broncos must decide on Bolles’ firstyear (2021) contract option. Exer
