2020 motorcycle race canceled after death

The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb motorcycle race will not return in 2020 after the death of a racer last month.

Carlin Dunne was killed during the motorcycle race June 30 after he highsided coming into the last turn, according to a news release. According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, it was the third death of a Hill Climb motorcyclist since 2014.

In a statement released Friday, the board of directors said that they are canceling next year’s motorcycle race “in order to determine the long-term viability of the motorcycle program.”

Race organizers will gather data on the impact of the motorcycle race and make a final determination in late 2020 regarding whether it will take place in future years.

“It’s just time to take a hard look at every aspect of the race, including the motorcycle program, and determine whether or not the event may change,” Chairman Tom Osborne said in the statement.

The motorcycle race has been a part of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for the past 29 years, and its history on Pike’s Peak dates back to 1916.

In a statement, Dunne’s mother Romie Gallardo said that she believes he would not want the motorcycle program to end.

“He would want us to learn from this tragedy,” she said. “He would encourage the official accident reconstruction authorities do what they are trained to do, and for the race officials to implement the additional safety precautions required.”
