Denver’s average high to drop into Dec.
For those of you ready for colder temperatures, the cooling down toward winter officially began Friday.
For those of you not quite ready for summer to leave, here’s the Sports section.
Denver’s average high temperature on Aug. 2 is 89 degrees, a number that might not come off as particularly significant at face value. But it’s 1 degree cooler than Denver’s peak average high temperature of 90 degrees — and it officially marks the start of the long, winding downward curve into winter.
On average, July is Denver’s hottest month of the year, with an average long-term monthly temperature of 74.2 degrees.
That’s a tick warmer than August’s 72.5-degree average monthly temperature, as a lower sun angle starts to more significantly influence temperatures by the end of the summer season.
On closer look, Denver’s average high temperature tops out at 90 degrees on July 12, and the average high remains at 90 through Aug. 1. But starting Friday — Aug. 2 — Denver’s average daily high temperature drops back to 89. The average high temperature will fall every day from now until Dec. 12, when the mercury bottoms out at 42 degrees.
This is Mother Nature’s gentlest reminder that just like death, taxes and Interstate 70 ski traffic, winter is inevitable.
Of course, we’re only days removed from Denver’s hottest day on average, which would be July 25, with an average high of 90 degrees and an average low of 60 degrees.
Denver’s coldest day of the year, at least on average? That would be Dec. 17 through 19, all three of which average a high temperature of 42 degrees and a low of 16.6.
Conveniently, the forecast may follow the climatological lead. Temperatures were expected to climb to right around 89 degrees on Friday, although the mercury is expected to rebound back above average and into the low 90s for the weekend.
Break out the “Game of Thrones” memes: Winter is coming. The long trek from summer to winter officially began Friday.
