Cheer for “Rockies East” in October

Readers talk and columnist Mark Kiszla responds

Time to wake up Rockies execs.

Glad to see you have been able to write the truth about the Rockies. They do stink. Why? Because Dick Monfort’s crew, led by a Harvard expert, has been trying to learn the baseball business on the job, at the same time the organization seems preoccupied with the Mcgregor Square real estate project. If Jeff Bridich were the Yankees general manager in 1927, he would have traded Babe Ruth. When the Rockies finish 30 games out of first place and there are 20,000 empty seats at Coors Field, maybe team executives will wake up. Stan, fed up

Kiz: I’m not ready to declare DJ Lemahieu was the biggest heist by the Yankees since the Red Sox gave a young pitcher named Babe Ruth to New York for cash considerations. But seeing as former Colorado players Mike Tauchman and Adam Ottavino also have contributed significantly to the success in the Bronx, maybe suffering baseball fans around these parts will adopt the “Rockies East” and cheer for the Yankees during the playoffs.

GM should go. Kiz, the only thing you left out of your great obituary on the Rockies’ season is Bridich has to go. He is a wannabe GM lacking the expertise to build a winning franchise. Lemahieu could have been our first baseman. But Dick Monfort will never pull the trigger on Bridich so long as ownership can cry all the way to the bank.

Kiz: Well, Bridich also was at the helm for Colorado teams that made the playoffs in 2017 and 2018. It might be a tad early to begin sharpening Marie-antoinette’s guillotine, don’t you think?

Why Blackmon? Huh? I’m a bit puzzled here, Kiz. By what logic can you lament the loss of Lemahieu and deem Charlie Blackmon expendable? He’s exactly the same type of player as DJ: a pro’s pro, smart and consistent with an insane work effort, never gives away an at-bat, a role model for younger teammates … you know the drill. Is your argument Blackmon is the only guy who could get the Rockies a star-level pitcher via trade?

Tom, just sayin’

Kiz: I wish Blackmon didn’t have a much fatter paycheck and far heavier legs than Lemahieu. We all love Chuck Nazty. But he’s showing his age. Reminds me a little of the slow, sad decline of Carlos Gonzalez.

I disagree with Rockies manager Bud Black that this team battles every game, regardless of how far behind they are. I think I see a mail-it-in attitude.

Bill, never surrenders

Kiz: Rockies who? It’s Broncos season.

Wait-and-see. And today’s parting shot is a reminder NFL fans generally think preseason is a good indication of future performance only if a young hometown hero is playing well.

Stop! Just stop with your over-reaction, sensationalized columns. Quarterback Drew Lock is a rookie. He played like a rookie. So what? It’s preseason football. This time of year hope springs eternal. John Elway cleaned house after the Vance Joseph debacle and replaced everything except the white lines in the parking lot at the practice facility. Let’s all of us wait to see what happens before we jump off the cliff again.
