Knitters needed to help make soft Knockers
Great Knockers Again, a local branch of Knitted Knockers, is hosting a community Knit-a-Thon from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Parker Library, 20105 Mainstreet in Parker.
Area knitters and crocheters are encouraged to help make a difference in the lives of breast cancer survivors by creating as many Knitted Knockers as possible during one marathon day.
Throughout the year, volunteer crafters create soft, comfortable prosthetics for breast cancer survivors at monthly meetings in two area yarn shops. These handcrafted Knockers are washable, reusable and durable — and much lighter weight than traditional silicone inserts. Since launching in 2017, Great Knockers Again has created and distributed more than 2,500 free Knitted Knockers via personal requests, at health fairs and in display baskets at 11 Denver-area clinics.
“We invite knitters and crocheters of all ages to come together and share the fun and camaraderie you can only find in a knitting circle,” says Mary Turek, Great Knockers Again coordinator. “But more than anything, it’s this cause that knits us together!”
Approved yarn, patterns, guidance and instruction for knitting and crocheting the Knockers, along with a catered lunch and beverages, will be provided for the crafters. Participants are asked to supply their own 8” Sizes US 3, 4 or 5 double-pointed needles, Size 4 or 5, 24” cable needle or Sizes D, F or G crochet hook.
Don’t knit or crochet? Volunteers are needed to help stuff and package completed knockers for distribution. Donations are always appreciated to help with materials and distribution costs. This year organizations, groups and individuals can contribute by sponsoring a table of knitters or crocheters. Table sponsorships are available at Knit/ Purl ($50), Crochet Hook ($100), Magic Loop ($150) and Double
