MISSING MAN, 82, FOUND ALONG RIVER
A man reported missing Monday evening on the Western Slope was found Wednesday by his grandson, who was in a kayak on the San Miguel River as part of a search team. The 82-yearold had been lying along a bank on the river.
Robert McLeroy was found off of Colorado 141 and taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction in serious condition, according to the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office. McLeroy had driven his red Ford Taurus off the roadway, its nose in the river.
The car, in leaving the road, had gone through brush and growth along the roadside, hiding the vehicle from teams that had been searching for McLeroy, the sheriff’s office said. Search efforts focused on the Uncompahgre Plateau included fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, volunteers and a Montrose County sheriff’s posse.
Ethan Archer, McLeroy’s grandson, searched the river by kayak as his father, Ivan, followed the kayak in a vehicle on the highway.
Archer spotted McLeroy and alerted his father, who then alerted authorities.
“This is a true miracle,” said Lt. William McClellan of the sheriff’s office.
