Huskers’ Frost targeting top Colorado prospects

- By Sean Keeler

Jack Stoll sort of shakes his head at it now. But of the nine Division I college football scholarship offers the tight end received coming off a standout run at Regis Jesuit High School, fewer than half — four — were from Power 5 programs.

“We used to say, back in high school,” said Stoll, rated by 247Sports as a 3-star prospect in the Class of 2016 and now a tight end at Nebraska, “that we felt that (Colorado) was a state that kind of got slept on in recruiting.”

Not anymore.

And not by Cornhuskers coach Scott Frost.

Of the top six Colorado prep prospects in the Class of 2018, as rated by 247Sports, half wound up signing with Nebraska.

Among the Class of 2019, two of the top six, including former Valor Christian quarterback Luke McCaffrey, the No. 1 in the state last winter, landed with the Big Red.

And the second-year coach — whose Huskers visit CU on Saturday — probably isn’t going away from these parts anytime soon.

According to the 247Sports database, the Big Red have offers out to five of the top six in-state prospects in the Class of 2020, and already have at least one confirmed among the top six for the Class of 2021 and the top six for the Class of 2022.

“At least when I was getting recruited, it seems like (Colorado) was more of a flyover state,” mused Stoll, who picked up 66 receiving yards on three grabs in Nebraska’s 35-21 win over South Alabama in the Huskers’ season opener.

“Now (it’s) where you see there are a lot of in-state guys getting a wider (look) from a variety of schools. I think it’s always been (underrated). But now people are starting to recognize it.”
