ROCK STAR RIC OCASEK FOUND DEAD

YORK» Ric Ocasek, NEW famed frontman for The Cars rock band, has been found dead in a Manhattan apartment.

The New York City police department said officers responding to a 911 call found the 75-year-old Ocasek at about 4 p.m. on Sunday. They said there was no sign of foul play and that the medical examiner was to determine a cause of death.

The Cars’ charttoppi­ng hits in the late 1970s and 1980s included “Just What I Needed,” “Shake It Up” and “Drive.” The band was inducted last year into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In May 2018, model and actress Paulina Porizkova announced on social media that she and Ocasek had separated after 28 years of marriage.

Capsized boat leaves 12 dead.

HYDERABAD,

INDIA» A sightseein­g boat capsized on a swollen river in southern India on Sunday, killing 12 people and leaving 25 others missing, an official said.

Andra Pradesh state’s home minister, M. Sucharita, said there were 61 people — 50 passengers and 11 crew members, all of them Indian nationals — on board the boat when it capsized on the Godavari river.

A search operation was underway to try to find the missing people.

Forecaster­s warn of U.S. coast rip currents caused by Humberto.

MIAMI» Beachgoers on the southeaste­rn U.S. coast should be wary of potentiall­y dangerous rip currents caused by Tropical Storm Humberto, the National Hurricane Center said.

On Sunday evening, Humberto was 170 miles east-northeast of Cape Canaveral, Fla., and moving north at 6 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 70 mph.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Humberto will bring large swells to the northweste­rn Bahamas and southeaste­rn U.S. coast for several days.

Algeria sets presidenti­al election for December.

Algeria’s interim leader has announced Dec. 12 as the date for the presidenti­al election, in line with the army chief’s demand to fill the vacancy left when longtime leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika was pushed from office more than five months ago.

Abdelkader Bensallah, during an address to the North African nation Sunday night, called on citizens to make Dec. 12 “an historic day to make the dreams of our people concrete.”

Poll: Outsider, jailed tycoon top Tunisian presidenti­al vote.

A jailed media magnate and an independen­t outsider appeared likely to face off in Tunisia’s presidenti­al runoff, after a roller coaster firstround race in the country that unleashed the Arab Spring prodemocra­cy uprisings.

Official preliminar­y results are expected in the next couple of days from Sunday’s voting, in which corruption, unemployme­nt and Islamic extremism were among key campaign issues.
