Former Broncos coach John Ralston has died. He was 92.

San Jose State, where Ralston finished his coaching career and later worked as special assistant to the athletic director, said Sunday that Ralston died Saturday in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Ralston was the head coach at Utah State from 1959-62, moved to Stanford in 1963 and to the Broncos in 1972.

After leaving Denver in 1976 with a 34-33-3 record in five seasons, he coached the Oakland Invaders of the United States Football League from 1983-84 and at San Jose State from 1993-96.

Ralston’s Stanford teams won consecutive Pac-8 championships and the Rose Bowl following the 1970 and 1971 regular seasons. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992, and he coached 1970 Heisman Trophy winner Jim Plunkett at Stanford and Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive lineman Merlin Olsen at Utah State.

Where’s the rush?

Sacks for the Broncos through two games: Zero.

Takeaways for the Broncos through two games: None.

Those two statistics aren’t the only reasons why the Broncos are 0-2 after losing 16-14 to the Chicago Bears on Sunday. But it certainly hasn’t helped.

“It wasn’t frustrating or surprising up until the end when we needed one,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said. “We could have used a little better rush there.”

The Broncos had at least one sack in every game last year.

“It’s tough,” defensive end Adam Gotsis said. “No one says getting back there is easy. We’re working and trying to get back there.”

Outside linebacker Von Miller has started the season with no sacks in Weeks 1-2 for the first time in his career.

“I’ve got to find a way to do my job no matter how fast they throw it,” Miller said. “It’s a double loss for Von (on Sunday).”

Sutton stays patient.

After a career-high 120 yards last week, receiver Courtland Sutton had four catches for 40 yards against Chicago, all in the fourth quarter.

“They tweaked some things (coverage-wise) by adding a little help over the top, which I kind of expected,” Sutton said. “We adjusted and kept going. You can’t have excuses.

“You just have to keep grinding and let the game come to you. You can’t force it. You need to have good energy and be a good teammate and know the ball will find its way to you.”

That happened on the Broncos’ final drive. Sutton had a 10-yard catch to convert a fourth-and-10 and a five-yard catch to convert a fourth-and-3.

“Flow of the game,” Sutton said of getting involved. “You have to let the flow happen. That’s why I wasn’t stressing or pressing.”

Said Fangio: “Very impressed (with Sutton). Courtland is a good, young player that is a grinder and a tough guy, plays hard (and is) very competitive. Really glad to be on the same team with him.”

Footnotes.

A pregame moment of silence was held for late Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, who died in mid-June after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. … The Green Bay Packers (2-0) have been installed as 8½-point favorites over the Broncos next Sunday.
