Teens sought to serve on Youth Commission

-

South Suburban Parks and Recreation is seeking dynamic students to serve on its Youth Commission, now in its sixth year.

The Youth Commission gives teens in grades 7-11 the opportunity to become involved in their community and in South Suburban events and activities. Commissioners organize fundraisers, host service projects and join fun activities with their peers.

Youths can practice their skills in critical thinking, communications, and creativity while learning about local government and the parks and recreation industry. The group recently planned and hosted successful fundraising tournaments at Colorado Journey Mini Golf, prepared hundreds of sack lunches for needy residents, volunteered with Children’s Kindness Network and organized a trail clean-up project along the Mary Carter Greenway. Youths in grades 7-11 who live in the district and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA are eligible. Youths must be willing to share ideas in group settings and be accepting of others and their ideas.

The commission is focused on discussing and suggesting possible solutions to issues that young people face. It provides input on programs that are offered to teens in the community; promotes positive programs with peers; promotes healthy living; and provides opportunities to develop as leaders.

The Youth Commission serves in an advisory role to the recreation department. Potential members will be interview and candidates are appointed by South Suburban’s Board of Directors.

The commission meets 6-7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month, from February-October.
