AVALANCHE ROLLS TO PRESEASON VICTORY

Kamenev, Logan O’Connor and Jayson Megna scored goals to lead the Avalanche to a 4-1 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night in Colorado’s next-to-last preseason game.

Those four players helped build a 4-0 lead. The Golden Knights averted the shutout when Patrick Brown scored with 18 seconds left in the game.

Colorado improved to 2-3 in preseason play, which concludes Saturday with a 4 p.m. game at Dallas against the Stars. The Avs begin the regular season Oct. 3 against the Calgary Flames at the Pepsi Center.

Suit says Kentucky violates Title IX.

Kentucky students filed a federal class action lawsuit alleging the school violates Title IX by not offering women more varsity sports.

The suit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court by senior Elizabeth Niblock and junior Meredith Newman says Kentucky needs to add 183 womentoits­programsto­comply with the 1972 federal law requiring schools to provide equitable sports opportunit­ies for men and women. The suit, which names the university along with president Eli Capilouto, athletic director Mitch Barnhart and the Board of Trustees as defendants, seeks to increase varsity sports and financial assistance for women along with unspecifie­d monetary damages.

Nets’ Irving injures face.

YORK» Kyrie Irving is hurt before NEW his Nets career even begins.

Irving suffered a left side facial fracture after being elbowed during a pickup game, and the Nets said Wednesday the all-star point guard is listed as day to day.

Irving was hurt Tuesday in one of the final workouts before the team opens training camp. The injury came less than an hour before general manager Sean Marks and coach Kenny Atkinson were scheduled to address the media, and Atkinson instead skipped the news conference to accompany Irving for evaluation.

Flames sign Tkachuk.

Flames signed forward Matthew Tkachuk to a three-year, $21 million deal.

The deal carrying an annual average value of $7 million makes him the highest-paid Flames player on the roster this season, and keeps him with the team through the 2021-22 season.

The move gets Tkachuk, who was a restricted free agent, to training camp eight days before the Flames’ season opener Oct. 3 against the Avalanche.

Tkachuk has 71 goals and 174 points in 224 regular-season NHL games since he was drafted sixth overall by the Flames in 2016.

Blue Jackets’ Dubinsky out indefinite­ly.

Blue Jackets center Brandon Dubinsky probably will miss the start of the season with a wrist injury.

General manager Jarmo Kekalainen said the 33-year-old Dubinsky is out indefinite­ly. No other details were provided.

Dubinsky is entering his 13th NHL season. Last year he recorded six goals and eight assists in 61 games. He added one goal in 10 playoff games.

Messi to sit out with injury.

SPAIN» Barcelona says BARCELONA,

Lionel Messi will be sidelined because of a muscle injury picked up in the first half against Villarreal in a Spanish league match Tuesday.

The club says Messi has a left abductor injury but did not give a timeline for his recovery.

Spanish media says Messi is expected to miss the league game at Getafe on Saturday and is doubtful for the Champions League match against Inter Milan next Wednesday.

Messi made his first start of the season against Villarreal following a long layoff because of a right calf injury suffered in the preseason.
