An El Paso County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man Sunday afternoon in Monument after responding to reports of a man firing a pellet gun at people and cars.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 3 p.m. about a person shooting a pellet gun from inside a home on the 200 block of Second Street, according to a news release from the Colorado Springs Police Department. When officers responded, the man barricaded himself inside a home.

The sheriff’s SWAT unit, as well as Colorado State Patrol and the Palmer Lake and Monument police departments, also responded, the news release said. The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating the shooting.

When officers tried to contact the person, the man fired at an El Paso County sheriff’s cruiser, causing damage to the front windshield and a door window, the release stated. The news release described the person as firing “multiple projectiles,” but did not specifically say whether it was the pellet gun.

The deputy inside the vehicle wasn’t hit. The shots also damaged other police vehicles, police said.

An El Paso county deputy fired at least one shot, and the suspect was hit and died at the scene, according to the release. The coroner’s office will release the person’s identity after family is notified.

No deputies involved in the shooting were harmed, and they have been placed on administrative leave, per protocol.
