DU MOVES TO 3-0 WITH 3-1 WIN OVER LAKE SUPERIOR STATE

-

The Denver Pioneers hockey team remained perfect on the young season after beating Lake Superior State 3-1 Friday night on the road.

Ian Mitchell scored late in the second period to put the second-ranked Pios on the board and tie the game at 1-all. The Pioneer pressure continued in the third, producing a pair of goals. Emilio Pettersen scored off a slick pass from Bobby Brink, who finished with two assists on the night, to give the Pios a lead they never relinquished.

DU played solid defense throughout, going 3-for-3 in penalty kills, with goaltender Magnus Chrona notching 23 saves.

The Pioneers finish the series with Lake Superior State on Saturday.

» The Jacksonville Jaguars have listed cornerback Jalen Ramsey as questionable to play Sunday against New Orleans.

Coach Doug Marrone made the designation Friday, a day after owner Shad Khan said he expects the disgruntled defender to return following a two-week absence because of an apparent back injury.

Khan told The Street he had a “heart to heart” with Ramsey earlier this week and “I think we’ll be able to come to what makes sense for all.”

It’s unclear if that means trading Ramsey or repairing his fractured relationship with the franchise.

» The New Orleans Saints have listed running back Alvin Kamara as questionable for Sunday’s game in Jacksonville because of an ankle injury that limited his practice time on Thursday and sidelined him entirely from practice on Friday.

Kamara, who routinely catches passes out of the backfield and also lines up at times as a receiver, has 583 yards and two touchdowns from scrimmage for New Orleans (4-1).

MLB FA qualifying offer price drops to $17.8 million.

NEW YO R K

» The price of qualifying offers for Major League Baseball free agents dropped for the first time, falling by $100,000 to $17.8 million.

Determined by the average of the top 125 major league contracts this year, the figure announced Friday reflects a flat market last offseason.

In addition, large signing bonuses in the contracts of Bryce Harper, Manny Machado and Mike Trout impacted on the drop, because the signing bonuses are prorated over the length of the contract rather than the year they were received. The trio had relatively low 2019 salaries and if their 2020 salaries had been included instead, the qualifying offer figure would have risen to $18.3 million.

Olympic gold medalist Dwyer gets 20-month ban.

Olympic gold medalist Conor Dwyer has received a 20month doping ban after an arbitration panel found that he had testosterone pellets inserted into his body.

The 30-year-old Dwyer, who won relay gold medals in 2012 and 2016, tested positive three times between Nov. 15 and Dec. 20 last year. His ban was made effective on Dec. 21, meaning he won’t be eligible for next year’s Olympics. The arbitration decision says Dwyer worked with a nutritionist who suggested the pellets.
