Mandatory evacuations were ordered in Larimer County on Wednesday because of a wildfire in the Glacier View area.

The afternoon order, for residents and businesses, were forced by the Elk fire, according to county officials.

“Evacuate the area immediately and as quickly as possible,” emergency management officials said. “Do not delay leaving to gather belongings or make efforts to protect your home or business.”

At about 6:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office said the fire had burned about 175 acres and that it was 10% contained.

Multiple aircraft fought the fire until darkness, along with more than 70 firefighters on the ground and 10 engines. One shed was damaged by the fire and about 50 homes were threatened.

An evacuation center was set up at the Livermore Community Center on County Road 74E, officials said. People can be updated on the fire by texting 888777 from a cellphone.

Emergency notifications were sent to 904 devices, the sheriff’s office said.

The evacuation area, in the Glacier View Gate 5 subdivision, is south of County Road 74E and north of Rim Road between County Roads 68C on the west and Walkabout Road, the sheriff’s office said.

The wildfire is burning in the area of Deep Cut Road and Elkhorn House Road, near the Ben Delatour Scout Ranch, according to the sheriff’s office.

A prescribed burn had been planned for the Scout Ranch area, conditions permitting, Tuesday through Friday. Information about the 505-acre burn was posted by the Nature Conservancy on the sheriff’s Facebook page.

At 2:17 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued an “urgent fire weather message” about “critical fire weather conditions Thursday.”

Blaze destroys four buildings in Moffat.

An investigation is underway after at least four buildings were destroyed by a fire in the tiny southern Colorado town of Moffat.

Saguache County sheriff’s officials say the Colorado State Patrol received word of a structure fire in the town Tuesday afternoon, and firefighters from several agencies responded.

The blaze has been contained, but it was still smoldering Wednesday. No injuries were reported.

Saguache County Sheriff Dan Warwick told the Valley Courier newspaper in Alamosa that firefighters ran out of water because there are no hydrants in the town of fewer than 200 people.
