Scientists say the globe sizzled to a record-tying hot month in September, driven partly by a sweaty United States.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheri­c Administra­tion says 2019 tied with 2015 for the hottest September on record globally. September averaged 60.71 degrees — 1.71 degrees higher than the 20th-century average.

Temperatur­es on land were the hottest on record for September, with records going back to 1880.

NOAA calculates that Earth is on pace for the second-hottest year on record, behind 2016.

“Tarzan” actor Ron Ely’s wife killed; son shot by deputies.

“Tarzan” actor Ron Ely’s wife was stabbed to death in their Southern California home by their son, who deputies found outside the house and fatally shot, authoritie­s said.

Deputies summoned to the home by a 911 call found Valerie Lundeen Ely, 62, dead with multiple stab wounds shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, a Santa Barbara County sheriff’s statement said.

The deputies identified the couple’s son, 30-yearold Cameron Ely, as the suspect, and found him outside the home after a search, the statement said.

Chicago teachers to begin strike Thursday.

Chicago parents and community groups are scrambling to prepare for a massive teachers strike set to begin Thursday, prompting the city to preemptive­ly cancel classes in the nation’s third-largest school district.

The Chicago Teachers Union confirmed Wednesday night that its 25,000 members would not return to their classrooms Thursday after months of negotiatio­n between the union and Chicago Public Schools failed to resolve disputes over pay and benefits, class size and teacher preparatio­n time.

The strike is Chicago’s first major walkout by teachers since 2012, and city officials announced early Wednesday that all classes had been canceled for Thursday in hopes of giving more planning time to the parents of more than 300,000 students.

Buses collide in central Sudan; 21 killed.

Sudan’s state-run news agency announced that a head-on collision between two buses killed 21 people in a central province.

SUNA reported that the crash happened Wednesday in a small town south of Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan Province. It said 29 other people were injured.

Local media said one bus was heading to Kaduqli, the capital of South Kordofan Province, and the other was traveling to Obeid.

Chelsea Clinton rules out run for Congress in 2020.

Chelsea Clinton has ruled out running for Congress next year, batting down speculatio­n that she may seek the open seat in her New York district after longtime incumbent Rep. Nita Lowey, a Democrat, unexpected­ly announced her retirement last week.

The former first daughter joined ABC’s “The View” program Wednesday as a guest host and was asked at the start of the show by host Whoopi Goldberg about her immediate political ambitions.

“We have to start by asking because apparently there are rumors that you are considerin­g running for Congress,” Goldberg said. “Congresswo­man Nita M. Lowey is not seeking reelection. Is that rumor? Are you thinking about it?”

“I’m not considerin­g running for Congresswo­man Lowey’s seat,” Clinton said. “But, Whoopi, I understand why people are asking, and someone has asked me some version of that question for as long as I can remember.”

Business owner gets 3 weeks for rigging her son’s ACT exam.

The owner of a California jewelry business was sentenced Wednesday to three weeks in prison after she was accused of paying $15,000 to rig her son’s ACT exam and of falsely listing him as a racial minority on applicatio­ns.

Marjorie Klapper, 51, of Menlo Park, Calif., pleaded guilty in May to a single count of fraud and conspiracy in a deal with federal prosecutor­s. She is the ninth parent to be sentenced in a widespread college bribery scheme.
