TEEN CHARGED WITH FIRST-DEGREE MURDER IN DEATH OF 64-YEAR-OLD

A 17-year-old was charged as an adult Thursday in connection with the shooting death of a 64year-old Lakewood man.

Caleb Hasson Brewer is charged with first-degree murder, attempted robbery and related crimes in the killing of Robert Steige, according to a statement from 1st Judicial District Attorney Peter Weir.

Brewer was arrested Monday and is being held without bail at the Mount View Juvenile Detention Center. He also is charged with attempted aggravated vehicle theft and two counts of possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

County coroner’s office identified a man killed Tuesday in a police shooting as 51-year-old Steven Alire of Grand Junction.

The cause of death was gunshot wounds in the torso, the coroner’s office said. Toxicology tests are pending.

Grand Junction police shot and killed Alire, who they said appeared to be holding a gun. Someone called police after Alire brandished a gun and knife in front of young people playing basketball at Orchard Mesa Middle School. after 78-pound meth seizure.
