THIRD AVS PLAYER TESTS POSITIVE

A third Avalanche player tested positive for COVID-19, the NHL announced Tuesday. The player is in self-isolation and has not had close contact with teammates for staff members, according to the league, which now has eight known positive tests among players.

The second Avalanche player to test positive was announced March 28, two days after the first.

The Ottawa Senators have the other five other positive COVID-19 player tests. The Senators played at San Jose on March 8, the day before the Avs played there, and both games were played despite a Santa Clara County warning for residents to stay away from larger gatherings.

The Sens and Avs used the same visiting NHL locker room at the SAP Center.

Oilers’ Cave remains in coma after surgery. The Edmonton Oilers said forward Colby Cave was out of emergency surgery after suffering a brain bleed.

The team posted on Twitter that doctors removed a colloid cyst that was causing pressure on Cave’s brain.

He remained in a medically induced coma at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.

Cave’s wife, Emily, said earlier on Instagram that doctors were “fighting to keep him alive” in surgery.

Buffs get four-star commitment. BOULDER» The CU basketball team received a commitment from fourstar forward Jabari Walker, from Compass Prep in Chandler, Ariz.

The 6-foot-8 Walker is the son of former Louisville star and 10-year NBA player Samaki Walker.

Walker is expected to sign his letter of intent when the spring signing period begins April 15. Walker previously announced CU, Cal and St. Mary’s as his finalists.

Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton and Carl Edwards were among the new nominees for NASCAR’s next Hall of

Fame class.

The new process starting this year splits the nominees into three ballots; Modern candidates, Pioneer candidates and Landmark candidates. Two entries from the 10 Modern candidates will be elected, along with one entry apiece from the five-candidate Pioneer and Landmark categories.

Janet Guthrie, the first woman to run in the Indianapol­is 500, Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600, returns as a nominee to the Landmark category after a one year absence.

Dayton’s Toppin wins Wooden Award. CONN.» Obi Toppin

BRISTOL, of Dayton won the John R. Wooden Award as the nation’s outstandin­g college basketball player.

Toppin (power forward), along with Saddiq Bey (small forward) of Villanova, Luka Garza (center) of Iowa, Myles Powell (shooting guard) of Seton Hall and Peyton Pritchard (point guard) of Oregon, also won positional awards from the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Duke’s Stanley declares for draft.

Also entering the NBA draft were Arizona point guard Nico Mannion and Maryland forward Jalen Smith.

Raiders sign DB Randall.

CALIF.» The Las Vegas Raiders ALAMEDA, signed defensive back Damarious Randall to a one-year contract.

The Raiders signed Randall to a $3.25 million contract after another deal with cornerback Eli Apple fell through when Apple didn’t pass a physical, a source said.

Athletes already qualified for Games keep spots. About 6,500 athletes who already have earned their spots for the Tokyo Games are in for 2021 under redrawn qualifying regulation­s published by the Internatio­nal Olympic Committee.

The IOC released its rewritten roadmap for qualifying for the games, which were reschedule­d due to the coronaviru­s. They’ll be held July 23 through Aug. 8 next year.
