LOUISVILLE TAGGED FOR RECRUITING VIOLATIONS

LOUISVILLE, KY.» Louisville has received a notice of allegation­s from the NCAA that accuses the men’s basketball program of committing a Level I violation with an improper recruiting offer and extra benefits and several Level II violations that accuse former Cardinals coach Rick Pitino of failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance.

The notice released on Monday is the completion of a two-year NCAA investigat­ion following a federal corruption probe into college basketball. Louisville acknowledg­ed its involvemen­t in the investigat­ion related to the recruitmen­t of former player Brian Bowen II, which led to the ousters of Pitino and athletic director Tom Jurich in October 2017.

ICU nurse Gabby Windey, a Broncos cheerleade­r, earns Outlaws honor. Aurora ICU nurse Gabby Windey of Boulder was selected by the Denver Outlaws as their honorary ninth-round pick in the 2020 Major League Lacrosse draft. Each MLL team had a ninth-round pick to honor a person that is leading the fight against COVID-19, the Outlaws said inarelease.

Windey is a sports fan who has worked at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora. She is a Denver Broncos cheerleade­r and used to dance for the Outlaws.

“I’ve had so many organizati­ons, like the MLL, reach out and be truly interested in telling our story as health care workers working during the pandemic,” Windey said in a release. “I am so grateful to be part of this community. It’s what makes Denver so special.”

McIlroy, Johnson headline charity match for COVID-19 relief. Live golf returns to television in just under two weeks with a $3 million charity skins match for COVID-19 relief that includes Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and the broadcast debut of fabled Seminole Golf Club.

McIlroy and Johnson will face Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff in an event billed as the “TaylorMade Driving Relief.” UnitedHeal­th Group Inc. is backing the $3 million donation. McIlroy and Johnson are playing for the American Nurses Foundation. Fowler and Wolff will play for the CDC Foundation.

New Orleans Saints quarterbac­k Drew Brees, Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky and U.S. women’s soccer star Carli Lloyd are among the athletes participat­ing in a project to recognize and celebrate health care workers for their efforts during the coronaviru­s pandemic. “The Real Heroes Project” is a collaborat­ion involving 15 leagues, including Major League Baseball, the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Soccer.

Beginning Monday, participat­ing athletes will share a personal thankyou message using #TheRealHer­oes. The athletes will cover their own name on their jerseys and replace it with the name of the health care worker they are honoring.

L A KE FOREST, ILL. The Chicago Bears have signed wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. to a one-year contract, the team announced. A 13year veteran who has played in Super Bowls with San Francisco and Carolina, Ginn caught 30 passes for 421 yards and two touchdowns with New Orleans last season.

The Indianapol­is Colts have decided not to exercise their fifth-year option on starting safety Malik Hooker, which could make him an unrestrict­ed free agent after next season. Hooker was Indy’s first-round draft pick in 2017, No. 15 overall, and showed play-making ability — when he was on the field. Then the injuries mounted. He missed the final nine games of 2017 with a knee injury and has wound up missing 14 games over his first three seasons.
