DEPUTIES FATALLY SHOOT MAN, SAY HE HAD FLED, BRANDISHED GUN
Clear Creek County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man Saturday night after they say he fled police in Idaho Springs, set the inside of his vehicle on fire and brandished a gun, officials said.
Idaho Springs police attempted to pull over a silver Saturn for traffic-related reasons around 9:55 p.m. Saturday, Clear Creek County Undersheriff Bruce Snelling said in an email. The driver of the Saturn fled and the pursuit ultimately was called off.
Ten minutes later, Snelling said, Clear Creek deputies spotted the Saturn on Colorado 103 and began pursuing the vehicle. During the second pursuit, the suspect set the inside of the Saturn on fire, Snelling said.
After the vehicle finally was stopped in the 9500 block of Peaceful Valley Lane, southwest of Idaho Springs, the driver — the vehicle’s sole occupant — brandished a gun, Snelling said.
Two Clear Creek County deputies fired an unspecified number of shots, killing the suspect, Snelling said. The deputies were uninjured.
Authorities are not yet publicly identifying the man who was killed or the two deputies, who are on administrative leave. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation will conduct a review of the shooting, Snelling said.
