SPROUT IS GATORADE BOYS TRACK ATHLETE OF YEAR FOR 3RD TIME

Valor Christian’s Cole Sprout was named Gatorade’s Colorado boys track and field athlete of the year on Monday, becoming the first Colorado boys track and field athlete to be given the award three years in a row.

Sprout did the same in cross country after claiming a third straight state title in the fall. The 5-foot-9, 135-pound senior would’ve had a chance to repeat as the 1,600- and 3,200-meter champion in Class 5A this spring if not for the coronaviru­s outbreak canceling the season. He won the Class 4A state championsh­ip in both events as a sophomore.

Off the track, the Stanford commit has volunteere­d with Denver Rescue Mission, participat­ed in a mission trip to Ethiopia and maintained a 3.98 grade-point average as a student.

2020 CHSCA All-State Games canceled due to coronaviru­s. The 2020 Colorado High School Coaches Associatio­n All-State Games have been canceled. The annual prep event features outgoing senior athletes in a variety of sports, including football, basketball and softball. In light of the coronaviru­s outbreak this year’s games were moved in April to July 13-18 at CSU-Pueblo. Monday, the organizati­on opted to cancel.

Former CU Buffs guard Dinwiddie tests positive for coronaviru­s. Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie says he has tested positive for the coronaviru­s. The former CU Buffs star told The Athletic he is experienci­ng symptoms and it is unclear if he can play when the NBA season resumes. Dinwiddie says he tested negative for the virus multiple times after returning to New York and took part in a couple practices. But he has since tested positive.

Diamondbac­ks’ Leake, Nats players opt out of 2020 season. PHOENIX» Arizona Diamondbac­ks right-hander Mike Leake is one of the first players to opt out of the 2020 season due to concerns about the coronaviru­s. Diamondbac­ks general manager Mike Hazen announced Leake’s decision Monday, shortly before Washington teammates Ryan Zimmerman and Joe Ross opted out of the virus-shortened season.

K-State players announce boycott after student’s Floyd tweet. MANHATTAN, KAN.» Kansas State football players say they will boycott all team activities until administra­tors create a policy that would allow a student to be expelled for “openly racist, threatenin­g or disrespect­ful actions.” The move follows a tweet by a student about the death of George Floyd that prompted outrage on campus.
