Prioritize the common good

Re: “Tri-County Health’s mandatory mask order to go into effect July 24,” July 12 news story

The city councils of Littleton and Centennial are meeting next week to decide whether or not to opt out of the Tri-County Health Department mandate to wear a mask in public places when social distancing is not possible — in stores, libraries, narrow trails, etc.

I don’t understand. Many scientists and medical experts tell us that wearing a mask and social distancing will help prevent the spread of this virus, which has already killed more than 135,000 in this country. Cases are on the rise.

There are some who are lobbying for opting out because “government can’t tell us what to do” or “one size solution doesn’t fit all.”

Do you wear a seat belt, stop at stop signs and red lights, observe speed limits, and respect others’ property? And if you don’t, what are the consequences: A citation, fine, court appearance, injury or death?

We do these things to avoid such consequences, but, moreover, for the common good. They don’t impinge on our personal freedom.

Now consider the consequences for not wearing a mask: illness, death, ICU’s at capacity or saying goodbye to a loved one via Zoom. I will gladly experience some mild discomfort to avoid any of that, for as long as it takes.
