CLEVELAND SENDS PITCHERS AWAY WHO BROKE QUARANTINE

CLEVELAND» The Cleveland Indians went a step further than just putting Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac into quarantine.

They’ve been sent away from the team, and it’s not known when they’ll be back.

Cleveland placed the two starting pitchers on the restricted list after the right-handers broke team rules and Major League Baseball protocols by leaving their hotel in Chicago last weekend and risking exposure to the COVID-19 virus.

“This one kind of hurts,” said Indians manager Terry Francona, who returned from a week away to address a lingering medical issue to find his team dealing with an internal situation that could affect its season.

Giannis ejected for headbuttin­g. LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA.» Giannis Antetokoun­mpo was ejected from Milwaukee’s game against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night after the NBA MVP headbutted Moritz Wagner.

Wagner took a charge from Antetokoun­mpo, who didn’t like the call in what had become a physical game.

During a break in the action with Milwaukee challengin­g the call, Antetokoun­mpo approached Wagner and started jabbering at him before headbuttin­g him and drawing the ejection in the second quarter.

Supreme Court stays out of NCAA case. WASHINGTON» A court decision the NCAA says will hurt college sports by allowing certain studentath­letes to be paid “vast sums” of money as “educationa­l expenses” will go into effect after the Supreme Court declined Tuesday to intervene at this point.

LPGA’s Shanghai stop canceled.

The LPGA Tour has confirmed the 2020 Buick LPGA Shanghai has been canceled because of the coronaviru­s pandemic. China’s government last month announced all internatio­nal sports events in the country would be canceled until the end of the year, and organizers of the Oct. 15-18 women’s golf tournament made the cancellati­on official in a statement Wednesday citing “the current health concerns and significan­t travel restrictio­ns put in place due to the COVID-19.”

Serena, Venus win, will play each other. LEXINGTON, KY. » Serena Williams needed to rally to win in her comeback following a six-month layoff, beating unseeded American Bernarda Pera 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in Tuesday’s first round of the Top Seed Open.

Williams advanced to a secondroun­d showdown on Thursday against older sister Venus, who dispatched Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-2. The two will meet for the 31st time.

Mystic lose fifth straight. BRADENTON, FLA.» Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and 13 rebounds and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Washington Mystics 68-48 on Tuesday night, handing the reigning WNBA champions their fifth straight loss. It’s the longest losing streak for Washington (3-5) since dropping seven straight in 2016.

UMass cancels football. Massachuse­tts is the latest school from the Football Bowl Subdivisio­n, college football’s highest level, to cancel its fall season.UMass is an independen­t in football and its decision affects only that sport. Most of UMass’ athletic teams compete in the Atlantic 10. Athletic director Ryan Bamford said the school will try to conduct a football spring season if possible.

A promise of pizza. LISBON, PORTUGAL» There will be a trophy — and lots of pizzas — if Atalanta pulls off an upset and wins the Champions League this month.

The team from the small Italian city of Bergamo faces Paris SaintGerma­in on Wednesday.

“As I have said, I will make pizza for 1,000 people if we win the Champions League,” Atalanta midfielder Marten de Roon said on Tuesday.
